Western Cape ANC weighs in on De Lille saga

DA leader Mmusi Maimane addressing Elsies River residents at the Leonsdale Civic Centre

De Vos says the court will have to make an interpretation of what was said by De Lille.

Counsel for De Lille, the city, the city manager, and the DA met in the Western Cape High Court yesterday to argue the merits of De Lille's application for urgent relief in her matter with the DA.

The public gallery in the courtroom is packed with De Lille's supporters.

De Lille and her former political party's deputy federal council Chairwoman Natasha Mazzone were both in court for the urgent application.

De Lille will be represented by Dali Mpofu, SC, in the latest application she has filed to oppose the DA's efforts, initially to sanction, and now to remove her.

"She doesn't seek to maintain the status quo, she seeks to reverse or rewind the status quo", said Rosenberg.

She reportedly said in court papers that the party had a "burning desire to replace me as mayor".

It would mean that any decision taken by a new Mayor and new mayoral committee members appointed in the meanwhile, would become invalid, with severe consequences for the functioning of the local government.

They cited case law where the Western Cape High Court had ruled in another matter involving an ACDP councillor that 48 hours was too short a time to give responses.

Ultimately, the DA is committed to seeing stability in the City of Cape Town, and most importantly, we would like to see good governance being restored and services being delivered to the people of Cape Town.

Its federal executive argued that this applied to De Lille because on 26 April she said in an interview with Radio 702 that she planned to quit the DA once she had cleared her name.

De Lille was removed from office on Tuesday, after a long-standing battle with the party's leadership and after a fractious relationship between her and members of the DA caucus in the City of Cape Town.
