Apple MacBook 'butterfly' keyboard issues prompt class-action suit

Flipkart and Amazon India sales kick off on May 13: Here are the deals from Samsung, Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi to look out for

The mechanism was announced as a key feature of the 12-inch MacBook in 2015, as a way to shrink the thickness of the keyboard and thus allow for a skinnier notebook.

We'll have to wait and see what Apple's response is, but the keyboard controversy threatens to put people off buying a new MacBook or MacBook Pro - not something Apple CEO Tim Cook and his colleagues will be pleased about.

Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit over what is alleged to be defective keyboards on its laptop line-up.

The complaint included multiple claims of an issue with the design of Apple's butterfly keyboard mechanism included in MacBook variants manufactured since 2015 and on MacBook Pro models since 2016.

On May 11, a class-action lawsuit was filed in Northern California's U.S. District Court against Apple.

"As a result of the defect, consumers who purchased a MacBook face a constant threat of non-responsive keys and accompanying keyboard failure".

According to the report by Apple Insider, Apple has acknowledged the issue a number of times in certain ways but without officially coming clean.

The lawsuit is calling for "appropriate injunctive and declaratory relief", including demanding Apple provide adequate disclosure of the defective nature of the MacBooks and pay plaintiffs' costs to remedy replacing defective MacBook laptops.

Apple did not respond to the complaint, according to CNET. In several cases, the failure of the keyboard to register keystrokes forced a lot of users to take their laptops in for servicing, which is a very expensive undertaking when out of warranty.

Like most of Apple's laptops, the MacBook Pros have very poor ratings when it comes to user-repairability, so those faced with sticky or stuck keys have been forced to go down the official Apple fix route. Apple had to replace not only an unresponsive key, but a substantial part of their MacBook for free while under warranty.

Last month, AppleInsider, in data from Genius Bar locations and authorized third-party shops, found 2016 MacBook Pro's keyboard failed roughly twice as often in its first year of use than 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pro models with scissor-type switches. They demand not only a replacement program and recall for all MacBook Pros sold since late 2016, but a fully redesigned keyboard, not just a replaced one.
