Apple faces a lawsuit over MacBook consoles

Apple came up with a second-generation design, which it used on the refreshed MacBook and, in 2016, on the MacBook Pro.

Apple is facing a class action lawsuit over claims the hardware maker knew that the "butterfly" keyboard on its MacBook range was defective, but rolled out the device anyway.

Frustration with Apple's MacBook keyboard has prompted a class-action lawsuit, after the Cupertino firm refused to acknowledge persistent problems with the "butterfly" keys.

The suit states that the design of the keyboard is such that it resists very little amounts of debris or dust, which leads to unregistered keystrokes. The lawsuit asserts that recent models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro contain a defective keyboard with non-responsive keys.

The lawsuit is calling for "appropriate injunctive and declaratory relief", including demanding Apple provide adequate disclosure of the defective nature of the MacBooks and pay plaintiffs' costs to remedy replacing defective MacBook laptops.

Apple first unveiled the butterfly mechanism keyboard with its 12-inch MacBook in 2015. "As numerous online consumer complaints describe, not long after consumers purchase the MacBook, their keyboard begins to suffer from a host of problems including keys sticking, keystrokes failing to register, keys typing a letter or command multiple times even though it was struck only once, and keys simply not working at all". The keyboard was advertised as being more responsive and comfortable than its previous iteration. In terms of replacement, the demand includes the reimbursement for buying a replacement laptop.

AppleInsider says it got its data from "Classified Apple Genius Bars in the U.S." which it has worked with for several years, including third-party fix shops authorized by Apple.

Apple's tech support staff have attributed faulty keys to pieces of dust somehow stuck under keys and causing them to jam, The Outline previously reported. As stated in the complaint: "Although every MacBook comes with a one-year written warranty, Apple refuses to honor its obligations toward the warranty".

An AppleInsider investigation from April 2018 revealed that the keyboard on the 2016 MacBook Pro failed twice as often as models from 2015 and 2014. Whether the keyboards are eventually fixed in a newer model remains to be seen, but for now, exercise some caution when buying a new Apple laptop, particularly if you type a lot. The lawsuit asks for both damages and refunds for anyone who has paid to replace their MacBook's keyboard.

Apple hasn't said anything publicly about the issue yet, although it has internally suggested methods like using a can of compressed air to clean the keyboard.
