Kaspersky to move to Switzerland following latest government ban

Additionally, Kaspersky Lab said it will relocate its software assembly tools - used to turn source code into software - to Switzerland by the end of 2018.

The move follows controversy in the United States past year when the federal government removed Kaspersky from its list of approved vendors, weeks after senior USA intelligence agency and law enforcement officials expressed concerns about the safety of its software.

Kaspersky said more transparency centers are set to open in North America and Asia by 2020, but the company is not yet ready to disclose more details.

Kaspersky Lab is moving core infrastructure from Russian Federation to Switzerland.

The creation of the Zurich Transparency Center is part of a larger plan announced by the company in October 2017, called the Global Transparency Initiative.

Independent supervision and reviewKaspersky Lab is arranging for the data storage and processing, software assembly and source code to be independently supervised by a third party qualified to conduct technical software reviews.

The Russian antivirus vendor embarked on this initiative after the U.S. government has accused the company of working closely with Russian intelligence agencies. Even Best Buy has taken a stand, pulling Kaspersky's products from its shelves.

The bans affected Kaspersky's reputation in the private sector.

In April, Twitter banned Kaspersky from advertising on its platform, citing U.S. allegations of ties between the company and Russian intelligence.

The Transparency Center will showcase the history of Kaspersky Lab products and, by extension, the company's commitment to protection.

For its part, the Russian antivirus vendor is doing all it can to keep its name clean.

Kaspersky Lab's move will be overseen by an "independent third party, also based in Switzerland", according to a statement issued by the company. This information is shared voluntarily by users with the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), an advanced, cloud-based system that automatically processes cyberthreat-related data.

The vendor claimed that before the end of this year it would start to assemble and sign products and AV databases in Zurich before distributing them around the world. With this new set of measures, Kaspersky Lab aims to significantly improve the resilience of its IT infrastructure to any trust risk - even theoretical ones - and to increase its transparency to current and future clients, as well as to the general public.
