Kia to introduce diesel-hybrid powertrain later this year

Kia Sportage badge

Paired with the brand's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) active emissions control technology, the system helps reduce Carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 percent on the new WLTP, and up to 7 percent on the NEDC, thus enabling "Kia to offer cleaner diesel engines", in their own words. The all-new third-generation Kia Ceed will be the second among a range of Kia models to offer the new powertrain from 2019.

The system is controlled by an advanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which calculates the most efficient use of the available energy, and adjusts accordingly, taking into account the amount of charge remaining in the car's batteries.

The technology will be called EcoDynamics+.

The added benefit of the tech is that when coasting towards a junction, the duration of the "stop" part of a start/stop system can be extended, which further helps to reduce fuel demands from the engine. If adequate battery power, the internal combustion engine is automatically switched off and the auto moves on electric.

The manufacturer also says that the system will have minimal impact on practicality, with the required 48V battery located beneath the boot floor. Reigniting the engine is done by pressing the acceleration pedal.

The MHSG is mounted in the engine bay and connected to the crankshaft by a belt. The adoption of the MHSG also means the conventional starter motor can be downsized and used primarily for cold starts at low temperatures.

More detailed plans for the roll-out of its new mild-hybrid technology in the United Kingdom will be announced by Kia in due course.

The mild hybrid will be paired to both manual and automatic transmissions and will work as described on all types of drivetrain layouts - front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive.

Kia already has hybrid, electric and plug-in hybrid models on sale in the UK.

Kia did not say how much range the Sportage will have with the engine switched off when using the system.
