Meryl Streep to star in thriller based on Panama Papers scandal

Meryl Streep is set to star in Steven Soderbergh's Panama Papers movie

Meryl Streep is set to star in the upcoming drama The Laundromat, based on the Panama Papers, the infamous 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial and attorney-client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities.

Streep has signed on for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film The Laundromat with Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas in early talks to join her.

Netflix previously set a movie on the scandal by German journalists Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer, who broke the story and wrote the book Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World's Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money. Within the documents, reporters discovered Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca allowed wealthy individuals to illegally funnel money around the world.

Streep will next be seen returning to her role as Donna Sheridan Mama Mia: Here We Go Again in which Lily James will play her younger self. It has a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns who has a history of frequently working alongside Soderbergh.

Michael Sugar, Lawrence Grey, Gregory Jacobs, Soderbergh and Burns are producing. Per THR, "Streep's character details are being kept in the secret [sic] but sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie".

The documents were leaked anonymously in 2015.

Most recently, Streep received a 21st Oscar nomination for The Post.

Streep continues to prove herself as one of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood. Her turns in The Post and now The Laundromat reinforce her dramatic chops and follow similar thematic paths, but she's still flexing her other muscles. She will also appear in Mary Poppins Returns, reteaming with her Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt.
