Palestinians Protest Opening Of US Embassy In Jerusalem

Tánaiste Simon Coveney summoned the Israeli ambassador to the Department of Foreign Affairs

More than 50 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in one days during Gaza strip protests. "People in this country are very excited that the president stood up for them". But Ambassador David Friedman tells NPR that Trump's goal with this embassy move was to effectively take Jerusalem off the table.

Demonstrators in Istanbul march with Palestinian flags during a protest in support of Palestinians and against the USA moving its embassy to Jerusalem on Monday.

He added: "From 1948, this occupation has been ongoing". Israel is absolutely fighting terrorism with us and combating terrorist financing.

A rally in support of the Palestinian people will be held from 12:30 p.m.to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ.

"We are prepared to face the Hamas threats to disrupt the (embassy) festivities", Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted.

He said the decision is merely a recognition of reality, and he said it provides a firmer foundation for peace negotiations. Israeli and United States officials gathered in the city amidst deadly clashes in the Gaza Strip.

Jason Greenblatt, Trump's Middle East peace envoy, said on Twitter that "taking the long-overdue step of moving our Embassy is not a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace deal".

Since announcing his decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Trump has become the namesake for a number of subjects in Israel, including parks, streets, and a planned high-speed rail station near the Western Wall in the Old City. In a recorded message, Mr. Trump said "our greatest hope is for peace".

Likewise, in a Fox News interview in Jerusalem, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin did not mention the violence.

The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Netanyahu added: "What a glorious day".

"Last December president Trump became the first world leader to recognize Jerusalem as our capital, today the United States of America opened right here in Jerusalem". On the Gaza border, Palestinian protests quickly turned into bloodshed. The resolution didn't name the US explicitly but expressed "deep regret" at any decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital - which US President Trump chose to do on December 6, 2017.

"We are witnessing a complete partnership between Israel and the United States towards oppressing Palestinians and violating their rights, not only in Jerusalem but oppressing Palestinians in the West Bank... so basically the U.S. is playing a major role in pushing toward more and more injustice and crisis in the region", the lawyer pointed out.

An estimated 35,000 Palestinians gathered on the edges of Gaza as the US Embassy opened in Jerusalem, fanning out along the fence in the largest demonstrations yet.
