Robinson Cano suspended 80 games for PED use, per reports

MLB suspends Seattle's Robinson Canó 80 games for drug violation

This suspension comes days after Cano suffered a fractured right hand in a game against the Detroit Tigers.

Mariners' star Robinson Cano has been suspended 80 games for violating baseball's joint drug agreement. As it turns out, the Mariners will have to get used to playing without him for the foreseeable future.

Eighty games is the standard suspension for a first-time offender.

Gomez cited "off the record sources and non-official reports" in breaking the news, which various other media outlets, including Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, have since confirmed via their own sources.

Cano, 35, is batting.287 with four home runs and 23 RBIs this season. Cano hadn't missed a game this season and hasn't played in fewer than 150 games in any of the past 11 seasons. Cano seemed prime to one day join the 3,000 Hit Club, as he sits fewer than 600 knocks away with five years remaining on his contract. Cano will now be ineligible to make the postseason roster if the Mariners go that far, no matter when his drug ban ends. The Mariners could, theoretically, also move Dee Gordon back to second base, with Guillermo Heredia potentially taking on a more prominent role.
