Second Durham rugby player dies in Sri Lanka

The Durham-based club was scheduled to play several games in and around Colombo in the course of the Sri Lanka tour

A police spokesman told the BBC: "Both men had returned from a nightclub and had complained of breathing difficulties, and they were admitted to the hospital, one died and another is in very critical condition".

The club confirmed with "great sadness" that Baty, his 26-year-old teammate had also died Tuesday.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received from our members, friends and the wider rugby family; they are very much appreciated at this hard time".

Local police said they were investigating links to "narcotics and liquor" involving the two, both members of the Durham-based Clem's Pirates rugby team, which is scheduled to play several matches in and around Colombo, the capital, this month.

The team was staying in a hotel in Colombo after playing their opening match against Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club on Saturday.

The club president also thanked people for the many message of sympathy and support that have been received from members, friends and the wider rugby family.

British rugby is in shock following the death of a club player while touring Sri Lanka.

"I really feel for the families, being that far away and knowing that a family member has died must be awful", he said.

"They are very much appreciated at this hard time", he said.

"My thoughts are with the families and friends and team-mates", the councillor said.

She tweeted: "Unbelievably tragic news".

'They are very much appreciated at this hard time, ' he said.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said it was assisting families of two British men.
