Superman actress Margot Kidder aka Lois Lane dies at 69

Margot Kidder played Lois Lane

Funeral arrangements are pending, according to Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Livingston, Montana.

Kidder's manager Camilla Fluxman Pines said she died peacefully in her sleep last Sunday. She became a household name after Superman was a massive box office hit in 1978.

Both Kidder and co-star Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, were relative unknowns when they got their leading parts, and neither saw many major roles afterwards.

Kidder's full name was Margaret Ruth "Margot" Kidder and she was born in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories province of Canada, but became a USA citizen in 2005.

American actor Mark Hamill posted, "On-screen she was magic".

Kidder, as ace reporter Lane, was a salty, sexually savvy adult who played off of the boyish, farm-raised charm of Reeve's Clark Kent, though her dogged journalism constantly got her into unsafe scrapes that required old-fashioned rescues. "These are hard words to write, so simply - you will be so very missed, my dear Margot", he told SyFy.

Stars are taking to social media to pay tribute to Superman actress Margot Kidder, who has died aged 69.

The Reeve Family and Foundation said it was "deeply saddened" by Kidder's death.

"It introduced some elements that are now genre tropes and she's fantastic in it", comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani said on Twitter on Monday. They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women's rights.

She won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2015 for her role on the children's TV show "R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour". However, in 2007, the actress stated that she hadn't had a manic episode since then, and she also became an advocate for mental health.

"The reality of my life has been grand and wonderful, punctuated by these odd blips and burps of madness", she told People shortly after. At a time when the subject was still strictly taboo, she was fearless in talking about her own experiences in order to help others facing the same battle.
