Tom Wolfe at home in New York in 2016

Tom Wolfe, a journalist and novelist known for books like "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", died on Monday in a Manhattan hospital while battling an infection, his agency Janklow & Nesbit Associates confirmed to CBS News.

Wolfe then enrolled in Washington and Lee University.

Multiple outlets credit Wolfe as a creator of "New Journalism", a style that combined traditional reporting and immersive writing. He had lived in New York since joining The New York Herald Tribune as a reporter in 1962. He also helped found a literary magazine.

In 1973, Wolfe co-edited The New Journalism, an anthology that collected several of his pieces along with work from peers such as Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, and others.

The Right Stuff, about the first American astronauts, was adapted into a film in 1983 with Sam Shepard, Dennis Quaid and Ed Harris.

He then moved onto his first work of fiction, "The Bonfire of the Vanities" a seminal tale of 1980s NY involving a Wall Street banker, a Bronx high school student, and a tabloid reporter.

Wolfe became a major figure in the NY social scene, identified with his distinct personal style - typified by a white, 3-piece suit.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Wolfe attended St. Christopher's college prep school.
