WhatsApp launches new Groups features

The new version of the app for iOS and Android enables groups to add a description setting out the goal, guidelines and topics for the group chat. These features are available for Android and iOS users on WhatsApp.

Messaging service WhatsApp rolled out new group-chat features on Tuesday, including more controls for administrators as well as regular group members. The description pops up at the top whenever someone new joins in. Some of the new features include better admin control, participant search, group catch up, and more.

The update comes after WhatsApp promised a new group video calling feature at the Facebook F8 conference last month.

Groups on WhatsApp have taken a central role in the messaging service that has more than 1 billion users, helping connect people with similar interests across the globe. "There are also people coming together in groups on WhatsApp like new parents looking for support, students organizing study sessions, and even city leaders coordinating relief efforts after natural disasters". To check new features, however, you have to make sure that running the latest updated app. "Admins can now remove admin permissions of other group participants, and group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started".

Other new WhatsApp group admin controls include the ability to control who can change a group's subject and icon - giving them a choice between all participants or only admins.

Following are the key features that have been added to revamp WhatsApp Group chat.

You'll now be able to find anyone in a group (especially in those large groups) by searching for them on the group info page. Tapping the @ button in the bottom right of the chat will highlight any mentions and any replies to your messages. "We've also introduced protection so users can't be repeatedly added to groups they've left", the company explained.

Banning automatically created WhatsApp group chat rooms is definitely warranted, but the fact that a bunch of innocent groups were caught in the crossfire is definitely upsetting a significant portion of the user base.
