Australia probes claim Google harvests data, consumers pay

Google is being investigated in Australia over the claims that it is harvesting data from millions of Android users who unknowingly pay their telecom operators for the gigabytes of data used during data harvesting.

In the event, new features of Google Maps were also unveiled and will be rolling out these coming months both on Android and iOS.

The long-running feud between Google and Oracle has officially spilled over into the tech-privacy debate, with Oracle prompting an Australian investigation into Google's alleged tracking of Android phone users.

Oracle, a staunch Google opponent, provided a market competition report to Australian regulators that asserts "Alphabet receives detailed information about people's internet searches and user locations if they have a phone that carries Android". Despite this, users should still trust the Play Store but by following some basic safety tips, they can help reduce the chances of downloading a rogue app.

"When you use Google services, we may collect and process information about your actual location".

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said he was briefed recently by USA experts who had intercepted, copied and decrypted messages sent back to Google from mobiles running on the company's Android operating system. It has even emphasized that the search engine giant has mapped IP addresses, mobile towers, and WIFI connection points, enabling Google to identify where a device is either connecting or attempting to connect without making use of the smartphone's site service. Australia's Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is reportedly reviewing Oracle's findings.

Also, Android phones include barometric technology, which uses air pressure to know a person's location in a high-rise building.

Volvo and Google first teamed up past year when Volvo first announced it would be using an Android-based infotainment system in future cars. According to him, "The ACCC met with Oracle and is considering information it has provided about Google services". This means that once you download the app and sign-in with your Google account, Google News will already be populated with stories and headlines it thinks you will care about. In reality, these apps would just trick the users into giving them admin privileges, after which they would show ads via Google Mobile Services, or load scam sites in the victim's browser.
