BJP's win in K'taka unparalleled, unprecedented: PM Modi

West Bengal Panchayat Election Result 2018 Live Updates: Will Trinamool Congress sweep polls? Counting today

Killings, bombing and booth capturing by firearms wielding political goons turned West Bengal's three-tier panchayat polls into a bloodied affair on Monday as violence claimed 18 lives, according to a local television channel. While the CPI (M) alleged that the house of the elderly couple was burned down by Trinamool Congress supporters, rivals said the incident could not be termed poll-related violence.

Brandishing a gun, unidentified miscreants, on Wednesday, escaped with a ballot box from polling booth no. 76 in Malda's Ratua during the re-polling in the Panchayat elections.

The state government and the poice have been asked to provide tight security arrangements to make sure the polling takes place in a free and fair manner, they said.

Re-polling is being held today in 568 panchayat election booths spread across 20 districts of West Bengal. He said that it was a matter of grave concern and was against the concept of democracy.

He also added, "In this panchayat poll, Trinamool lost the highest number of workers compared to any other party and has the highest number of injured workers". People from all parties except one ruling the state have suffered.

He was addressing workers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s central office in the national capital after the party emerged as the single-largest party in the Karnataka Assembly polls. Democracy was throttled at every stage from filing nomination to the polling day.

Stating that BJP's win in Karnataka was unparalleled and unprecedented, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the BJP will not allow Karnataka's development journey to be trampled upon. "All political parties, including civil society and judiciary, must play an active role to strengthen the democratic spirit".
