Harmanpreet, Mandhana named captains for Women's T20 challenge

Brendon Mc Cullum of the Royal Challengers Bangalore

Once we have those many players then I think it will be wise enough to have a women's IPL.

According to Rajeev Shukla, the IPL Chairman, the worldwide roster is also set to include the likes of New Zealand's Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, England's Danni Wyatt and Danielle Hazell and Australia's Megan Schutt, Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry, who have all confirmed their participation for the one-off T20 outing.

When England cricketers Alex Hales and Adil Rashid made it clear they are focussing on white-ball cricket and putting a break to their respective first-class careers earlier in March, eyebrows were raised regarding their decision and what it meant, in general, for the overall future of Test cricket.

McCullum, who played 101 Test for New Zealand before retiring from global cricket in 2016, told Cricket Monthly that interest in five-day matches was dying.

Now part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the IPL, Baz feels that the skill sets required in T20 cricket are completely different to those in Test Cricket. "They might watch the first session, and the last session on day five if it's tight. then you strip it back a level as well and you think domestically, how can teams around the world afford to even exist?"

"Long long-term, I see a T20 franchise as owning players, and I don't see them releasing those players to play for their nation in a Test match", he said.

In the future, McCullum firmly feels that Twenty20 franchises will stop letting players leave midway through tournaments in order to represent their countries in Test matches. To me, they're played with the same instruments but they're completely separate games.

"We were in talks with several Boards and I am pleased with the outcome". The contest will be played at the same venue before the playoff of the ongoing IPL.

Despite a modest return so far for RCB in the current IPL (127 runs from six matches, striking at 144.31), the 36-year-old believes he has another couple of years of top T20 cricket in him. "And I think long term it would be nice to be able do that in a T20 environment".
