IN TWEETS: Tributes pour in for legendary photographer Sam Nzima

Nzima captured the picture of Mbuyisa Makhubu carrying Pieterson's body as he and Antoinette Sithole ran from the police, who were indiscriminately shooting at schoolchildren who were protesting in Soweto against the Bantu education system on June 16 1976. He approached The World and started freelancing for them before he took the iconic photo of the Soweto student uprisings in 1976.

The image displayed the brutality of the apartheid government to the world.

Nzima's photograph of the Soweto student uprising galvanized worldwide public opinion against apartheid, South Africa's system of racial discrimination that ended in 1994.

Nzima's photo was published on the front pages of major newspapers around the world.

According to SA Histroy Online, Nzima took up photography after being fascinated by a camera belonging to his teacher at school. He was eventually placed under house arrest for 19 months for taking photos of the uprising. But he became proud when he saw the lasting influence of his photo and its contribution to ending apartheid, he said. In 1998, he finally won the long standing legal battle. The museum, opened in 2002 in Soweto, shows the history of the Soweto students' uprising on June 16, 1976.

One of the leaders who planned and led the 1976 uprisings Seth Mazibuko says this is a big blow because two people (MamWinnie Madikizela-Mandela and Nzima) around the 1976 uprising have just passed away.

Ramaphosa described Nzima as one of a kind who used his camera to capture "the full brutality of apartheid oppression on the nation's psyche".

Nzima was honoured with the Order of Ikhamanga in Bronze in 2011.
