Meanwhile, a 69-year-old double amputee climber from China flew on a helicopter from Everest to Kathmandu on Wednesday, two days after climbing the mountain.

The 48-year-old reached the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit via the Southeast Ridge route, accompanied by 13 other climbers including his clients, Tourism Department official Gyanendra Shrestha said from the base camp.

Nepali climber Lhakpa Sherpa has just broken her own record for successful summits of Mount Everest by a woman by reaching the peak of the world's tallest mountain for a ninth time.

Mr Kami Rita first reached the top of Everest in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition. One of his 21 Everest ascents was made from the Chinese side in 2016.

Lhakpa stood at the top of Everest early on Wednesday too.

Nepalese mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa prepares to leave for an expedition to Everest in Kathmandu on April 18, 2018. She now lives in the U.S. and works at a departmental store.

Xia Boyu is not the first double-amputee to reach Everest's peak, but he is the oldest.

Everest oxygen failure accidents avoided

Kami is a professionally trained Sherpa while Lhakpa is a housewife and avid climber.

Before leaving for the mountain last month, Kami Rita told The Associated Press that he wanted to scale Everest at least 25 times.

"He has set the world record", said Mingma Sherpa, chairman of the Seven Summit Treks company that employs Kami.

Nepal has issued 346 permits to mountaineers for this year's spring climbing season, which runs from mid-April to the end of May. She was making her way down to the advanced base camp, he said.

Foreigners must pay $11,000 for a permit but cut-price climbing outfits skimping on basic safety requirements have flourished in recent years, luring amateurs to the challenge.

The expedition started after eight Sherpa fixed ropes to the Mount Everest.
