Microsoft reportedly planning cheaper Surface tablets to compete against $329 iPad

Microsoft working on smaller cheaper Surface tablets to rival Apple's iPad

Microsoft's non-pro line of Surface tablets hasn't been updated with newer models since 2014, when the Surface 3 launched with an Intel ATOM processor and Windows 8.1. The move is aimed at taking market share from Apple's iPad, which dominates the lower-cost tablet market. The new Surface Tablets will have a 10-inch display and will feature USB-C connections.

The report claims the new tablet will be priced around $400 to compete with the iPad, and will also feature softer corners, again similar to the design of the current iPad.

Microsoft receives a lot of criticism these days for its increased focus on the cloud and business customers, but it seems that the company remains very interested in the consumer market. However, if executed correctly, Microsoft might be able to hit a sweet spot with the upcoming Surface Tablets and might as well give Apple a run for its money.

$400 will naturally get you just the slate, without any productivity-enhancing accessories like keyboards or pens, while LTE connectivity and twice the base 64GB internal storage should also cost extra.

Perhaps most importantly, there's no reason to fear an unlikely comeback of the universally loathed Windows RT platform, with the full 10 Pro experience to be offered on a tighter than usual budget. Apple is the dominant player in the tablet market and makes iPads ranging from $329 in price all the way up to over a $1,000 with the iPad Pro.
