No more Family Guy: James Murdoch to leave Fox after Disney deal

Suzanne Scott Fox News

Lachlan Murdoch will serve as chairman and chief executive of the "New Fox", to be formed after the proposed sale of most of 21st Century Fox's film and TV assets to Disney, with Rupert Murdoch serving as co-chairman of new company alongside his son. Wednesday's announcement also fails to address questions about the fate of myriad other executives including current 21st Century Fox co-president Peter Rice and Fox Television Group chairs Dana Walden and Gary Newman.

"We have worked through the winter "standing up" a reimagined independent Fox", said Lachlan Murdoch in a statement.

Rupert Murdoch said Fox will be the only media company exclusively focused on the USA market and "on what America loves best-sports, news and entertainment".

During a recent sit-down with Collider, Deadpool himself commented on the Disney-Fox deal, saying - at least from his perspective - although he hasn't heard anything new, the potential acquisition of Fox, whether it be by Disney or Comcast, hasn't affected anything regarding development and plans.

Fox CEO James Murdoch isn't mentioned as part New Fox's leadership but is widely expected to leave Fox to do his own thing. Speculation about James at the time of the deal centered on a possible role at Disney, where CEO Bob Iger's contract had been slated to end in 2019, and an heir apparent was not in place.

The new Fox will house assets including Fox News, Fox Business Network and sports cable networks, the company said. They are all assets the company said it would keep after striking a $52 billion-deal late a year ago with Disney for its major TV and film divisions, which include cable channels FX and National Geographic.

The Murdochs are expected to spearhead the new, slimmer Fox once the deal shakes out. In a further complication that would test Rupert Murdoch's power over Fox shareholders, cable giant Comcast could make its own play for Fox assets. "I look forward to joining Lachlan as we begin to establish new Fox".
