Republicans pledge teacher raises ahead of Wednesday's rally in Raleigh

Educators filed into the General Assembly building Wednesday as lawmakers gaveled in the 2018 session

The state Democratic party responded to the Republican news conference saying Republicans today refused to address teachers' concerns and instead reheated the same warmed-over proposal that fell flat previous year.

CMS says North Carolina is 43rd in the nation when it comes to per-pupil expenditures. The Republican representing North Carolina's 6th congressional district says his younger brother is a teacher and he often hears about the issues educators face.

The thousands of North Carolina teachers participating in Wednesday's protest in Raleigh will still be paid for the day, but some might lose $50 for not showing up to teach their classes.

"I'm personally invested, not only as a legislator, but also as a parent and I am proud of the work that happens every day in schools across the state, of the miracles that are worked", Moore says.

Teachers in Arizona won a 20% raise.

"That was my pay for the whole month", Cols, who is as employed as an English teacher, wrote.

"We need people to judge us on what we've done", Woodhouse said of Republicans.

More than 15,000 teachers signed up to attend the rally, but it's unclear how many will take the day off and come to the march.

"The hypocrisy is that they say they are supporting the students".

"Whether it's this issue or the gun issue, they're being pimped and prostituted", said Terry McCann, a math teacher at J.D. Clement Early College High School.

Immanuel Jarvis, who has a child attending Clement Early College, said losing a school day will hurt black and Hispanic students the most, particularly those who are at risk of not doing well on end-of-year tests.

Over 1,000 people shared Cols' lengthy post, which stated how much he loved and respected his job before revealing a photo of his latest paycheck of $1,715.81, which can be calculated out as $53 a day.

Charles Hellwig, chairman of the Wake County Republican Party, on Tuesday criticized the North Carolina Association of Educators.

"If it walks like a duck and it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it's a duck", Hellwig said.
