Sony calls time on PS Vita game card production

Game developer ConcernedApe and publisher Chucklefish have officially announced that Stardew Valley will launch on PlayStation Vita this month. According to Kotaku, Sony's USA and European branches "plan to end all Vita GameCard production by close of fiscal year 2018", which ends on March 31, 2019. While that's already an impressive number of platforms, the developer today confirmed that the game will be launching on none other than the lonely PlayStation Vita next week. The Playstation Vita maintains a very loyal fan base, myself included and is still home to many new indie, and JRPG games, as well as a great place to play Playstation classics.

Players will have until the cutoff point of February 15th, 2019 to purchase game cards while digital software for the handheld console will continue to available for purchase and download. But some people rely on them to save space on their Vita system.

Thus, a new decision from Sony closes more the panorama for PS Vita, a console that will stop having monthly games, along with PlayStation 3, in the PlayStation Plus service in March 2019. The company has not, however, offered any details on when - rather than if - it plans to retire the Vita itself. Limited Run Games, for instance, offers a few physical releases.

When Kotaku reached out, a Sony spokesperson confirmed in an email that the PS Vita physical card production is coming to an end.

The PlayStation Vita has been facing an uphill battle since its launch.

But the end may come sooner rather than later, especially with rumors that Sony may be working on a system set-up akin to the Nintendo Switch. If you want to get any physical Vita cards for your collection, now is the time to buy. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the PlayStation Vita.
