Tesla breaks EV towing record

Tesla's Model X is Powerful Enough to Pull a Semi Up a Hill in the Snow

Monday was an exciting day for electric vehicles everywhere. But the Tesla was the first electric passenger auto to achieve this feat. On a remote taxiway at Melbourne Airport, a Tesla Model X P100D, with the greatest pulling power of any electric passenger vehicle, came face to face against the newest star of the Qantas fleet, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Why the Tesla and Qantas partnership? The Model X towed the empty aircraft for about 300 metres creating the world record.

While the Dreamliner didn't have any passengers or cargo on board, and it only had a small amount of fuel, it's an incredibly impressive feat for the Tesla vehicle, which can typically tow about 5,500 pounds, according to a press release. However, the aircraft weighs 130 tonnes, which is much higher than its rated capacity.

Now, Tesla and Qantas have teamed up for a more up-to-date take on the same stunt. However, there have been instances before where production cars towed aircraft.

Joining the league, the popular German brand, Porsche beat the record with its Cayenne S Diesel that pulled a 285-tonne Airbus A380 for 73 meters in 2017.

Talking about the Tesla Model X P100D's mechanical strength, the EV uses an electric motor with the maximum output of 1,072Nm of torque. After the news of Tesla planning to launch the Model 3 in India, many people booked the vehicle but the plan has been deferred for various reasons including the high import tax in the Indian auto market.
