U.S. will not take part in Astana talks on Syria - diplomat

Astana is hosting a two-day meeting attended by representatives of Russia, Turkey and Iran - the guarantor states that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016.

Moscow, Ankara and Tehran will hold regular consultations with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on launching a constitutional committee, Kazakhstan's Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzhan Ashikbayev said, reading out a joint statement adopted by Russia, Turkey and Iran at the ninth worldwide meeting on Syria, held in Astana on May 14-15, TASS reprots.

The statement affirmed the need to enhance efforts to provide aid to all Syrians in the field of restoring their normal and peaceful life and that the achievement of this goal is ensured by the rapid and safe delivery of humanitarian assistance without obstacles.

Latest developments in the de-escalation zone, releases of captives and hostages, and forming a constitutional committee will be on the agenda.

The Iranian and Russian delegations have also held meetings with Bashar Ja'afari, representative for the Bashar al-Assad regime. The UN Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura is expected in Astana today.

At a press conference, the head of the Russian delegation, Alexander Lavrentiev, noted that at this ninth round of talks, which opened on Monday, bilateral meetings and among the guarantor States were very positive and necessary.
