Unemployment in the East drops - but so does number of workforce jobs

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show the unemployment rate for people aged 16 years and over was 4.2 per cent for the United Kingdom as a whole.

Average earnings of employees including bonuses grew 2.6 percent from previous year, while earnings excluding bonuses advanced 2.9 percent in three months to March. That means they outstripped CPI inflation for March which stood at 2.5 per cent. Real wages grew by just 0.4%, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). According to the TUC, wages are worth £24 a week less than in 2008. It should be the key to unlocking a return to monetary normality'.

The number of people in employment reached a new record rate of 75.6% after employers hired a larger than expected 197,000 people in the first three months of the year.

Kate Smith, head of pensions at Aegon, also points out that this strong employment data is unlikely to be enough in isolation for the BoE to raise the base rate imminently.

Northern Ireland had the lowest regional unemployment rate at 3.1 per cent while Wales recorded 4.4% per cent. "Millions of jobs do not pay a real living wage".

The ONS published its latest figures for foreign nationals' employment and for it productivity, which is a problem for the long term for the economy of Britain.

Sinclair argues that thousands of United Kingdom employers are still betting on continuing economic growth and are trying to hire.

National ONS figures show the number of people in work in the United Kingdom increased between December 2017 and March 2018 to 32.34 million, 197,000 more than in October to December 2017.

Wages in the United Kingdom are rising faster than inflation figures released this morning show. It's important to remember, though, that this isn't a measure of migration.

"The figures once again cement that turnaround, with an employment rate of 75.6 per cent, and on average over 1,000 people each and every day, since 2010, getting a job".
