California governor slams Trump for 'lying' about immigration at 'sanctuary city' roundtable

County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar speaks to President Trump while the President's advisor Stephen Miller listens.

"We have people coming in to the country, or trying to come in", Trump told California Republicans visiting the White House, "we are taking people out of the country".

The officials, including Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel and officials from Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano and Los Alamitos, hailed from counties and cities that have taken stances against the law, some by joining or filing briefs in support of a Trump administration lawsuit challenging it.

Trump on Wednesday met with more than a dozen conservative California officials and sheriffs who oppose the state's Democrat-led efforts to block local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. "You've gone through a lot too, although it's become quite popular what you are doing".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Department of Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan are also expected to attend the meeting, according to the White House.

Escondido Mayor Sam Abed.

President Trump said California's landmark sanctuary state measure "forces the release of illegal immigrant criminals, drug dealers and violent predators into communities and provides safe harbor to some of the most vicious, violent offenders on Earth".

"She informed them and they all fled-or majority fled-and that whole operation took a long time to put together", Trump said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan opposes that effort and is seeking a bill that can pass Congress and get President Donald Trump's signature.

Trump assured Edgar that "we're with you 100 percent" and said "if it's at all possible" he would like to help the city fight the lawsuit. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has been a staunch supporter of sanctuary laws and in March warned the immigrant community ahead of a large-scale operation by federal immigration authorities. "I will not back down & I will keep fighting!"

While Barstow had not seen such deadly incidents as a result of immigration policies, Hackbarth-McIntyre said it was only a matter of time because local cities "can't enforce anything". The administration's position has recently been gaining steam within California with 35 local jurisdictions having come out against the state's sanctuary legislation which went into effect in January of this year.

Supporters of the law believe it makes immigrants who are living in the country illegally more likely to report crime and cooperate in law-enforcement investigations.
