Florida teacher accused of drowning raccoons during class

'It's awful. It still does make me sick to my stomach'.

"We received statements that the teacher drowned multiple animals in front of students, and with student participation, because the animals were nuisance animals to the ag program at the school", school district spokesman Kevin Christian told the newspaper.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told Newsweek it is investigating "an incident" that occurred at Forest High School in Marion County involving at least one raccoon and an opossum. So they trapped the animals, and then placed the trapped animals inside a garbage bin filled with water.

Regardless of whether the animals killed the chickens raised by the class, Brewton had no business killing them, she said. "It's bad. It still does make me sick to my stomach", said the student's mother, who wanted to remain anonymous.

Her son told her the agriculture teacher threatened anyone who recorded or took pictures of the incident would be given a referral.

Brewton was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday and the incident is being investigated by Marion County Public School officials. The district further stated that regardless of the outcomes of the investigations, Superintendent Dr. Heidi Maier is recommending that the teacher be fired.

"While law enforcement tells us the teacher did not do anything illegal, his actions before students are certainly questionable", a spokesperson said.

It released a statement on Tuesday saying it was "looking into" the incident and that officers are determining "the legality of what occurred", according to OCALA. Those findings will be presented to officials with the state attorney's office, who will decide if criminal charges are appropriate.

Dewie Brewton, who has been a teacher at Forest High School since 2006, has majority support from his students who are rallying together in his defense.

'We would like to say that we are 100 percent behind our adviser and everything he does for our children/students, ' the statement, posted on Facebook, reads. "He is a man of faith and has always provided the wisdom and guidance needed for his students to succeed".

'We must focus on all of the extremely positive and life changing things that this man has done for people'. The students gathered around the bin to watch, and assist, as the penned animals drowned.

She said her child came home in tears and was yelling and angry over what happened to the animals. Some students even helped the teacher to punish the animals, the rest just watched, but nobody tried to prevent the execution.
