The aim is to give game and audio application developers more time to update their code before reintroducing the policy for the Web Audio API in Chrome 70, due out in mid-October.

The autoplay blocking is an example of how browsers are getting more assertive on behalf of users faced with pushy websites.

The original muting of the nuisance videos within Chrome was created to remove one of the annoyances that might have pushed users to install adblocking or other software, something Google wants to avoid as advertising is the primary source of the company's revenue. Benji Kay, a developer of web games and audio tools, said: "Simply delaying the enacting of this policy doesn't solve any of the major concerns that have been raised".

Pallett says this temporary rollback is intended "to give Web Audio API developers. more time to update their code" before the auto-muting is brought back for Chrome version 70 in October.

Google has pushed an update to Chrome that essentially rolls back an unpopular policy change from last week that automatically muted audio for auto-playing web-based apps, including many HTML 5 based games and art projects. Along with Site Isolations trials, Symantec distrust and a slew of bug fixes, the most front-facing feature in version 66 was easily Chrome's new autoplay policies for embedded media on websites.

Not long after web-based game developers began complaining about broken audio in their products, a Chrome product manager said his team was processing the feedback and looking for solutions. It is working to "improve things for users and developers".

The autoplay-video blocker is created to fix one of the greatest problems of the Internet: autoplaying videos on websites. Pallett writes that Google is "still exploring options to enable great audio experiences for users" but notes that "this is a nontrivial user interface challenge with a lot of nuances".

By automatically pausing Web Audio objects when a webpage is launched, the update earlier this month was meant to help silence ads that seemingly begin barking at you when you visit some sites.

Google didn't immediate respond to a request for comment.
