Government has pledged around £400m to remove defective cladding from high-rise blocks

According to review author Judith Hackitt recommendations of her review

A report on United Kingdom building regulations set up after the Grenfell Tower tragedy found "deep flaws" in the rules but stopped short of calling for a ban on cladding, the combustible material blamed for contributing to the fire that killed 71 people in London last June.

Seventy-one people died in the fire in the west London tower block last June.

He added: "Having listened carefully to concerns, the Government will consult on banning the use of combustible materials in cladding systems on high-rise residential buildings".

In a report published on Thursday, Dame Judith Hackitt, the government's reviewer, said a new standards regulator should be the centrepiece of a reformed system but suggested she did not believe combustible materials should be banned.

But Labour MP and Grenfell campaigner David Lammy branded her report "a betrayal and a whitewash".

But, responding to criticism of her report, she said she was open to seeing combustible cladding banned in the future.

Cladding on hundreds of tower blocks across England which was tested in the aftermath of the fire failed safety tests.

Theresa May confirmed the risky materials would be removed during Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

Residents and campaign groups had called for a ban on combustible materials being used in construction.

"Worrying that a fire like Grenfell could happen again is something that keeps many of us awake at night", Sadafi told the BBC.

Speaking in the House of Commons three hours after the publication of the review, Mr Brokenshire said new laws would be introduced that delivered "meaningful and lasting" change to the building safety system.

"When we met Dame Judith Hackitt we asked her for an outright ban on combustible cladding".

"The next problem may not be cladding and I have tried to fix the system, irrespective of what the next problem might be, not just the problem with cladding". An aluminium cladding with a combustible plastic core is thought to have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

She also said people in the industry did not know who was in charge, that enforcement was patchy and penalties were so small as to be ineffective.

However she does NOT recommend a ban on the use of flammable cladding saying it will "not address the root causes" of the issues that led to the tragedy. She said she wanted desktop studies to be carried out only by qualified people, which she said would effectively stop unregulated fire engineers paid by builders of building owners from declaring systems safe.

This dutyholder during occupation and maintenance should maintain the fire and structural safety of the whole building, and identify and make improvements where reasonable and practicable.

- An "outcomes-based approach" to the regulatory approach to be overseen by a new regulator.
