Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley was arrested last Friday after enrolling in two Dallas high schools, and causing a sensation with his basketball skills, with sports coaches handing him an award for offensive player of the year.
The NBCDFW.com story said Gilstrap-Portley once played basketball at North Mesquite High School in Texas and at Dallas Christian College.
The 25-year-old was arrested last week and charged of tampering with government records and is now out on bond. This year, he used Hurricane Harvey as cover to attempt to relaunch his basketball career.
As reported by Dana Branham, Claire Ballor and Julieta Chiquillo, the 25-year-old began the 2017-18 school year at Skyline High School "claiming to be a Hurricane Harvey refugee" named Rashun Richardson, then transferred to Hillcrest in October to join the basketball team.
His true identity was discovered when his ex-basketball coach at another area high school spotted him playing a high school tournament and recognized him from many years earlier.
"It's unbelievable to me that he could get away with this", the woman said.
Gilstrap-Portley fully immersed himself in the high school scene, going so far as to date a 14-year-old classmate, according to the girl's mother. "I don't know what, how (the school) let this slip through the cracks". However, when they spoke on the phone the unidentified woman said he was always respectful and her daughter assured her there relationship wasn't sexual.
She added: 'I'm upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time. It could have gone differently if he had other intentions to hurt her or to traffic her'.
"He took that as an opportunity to gain access to our schools", Dallas Independent School District spokeswoman Robyn Harris told the newspaper.
"We need to make sure we follow better protocols to try and prevent this from happening, but unfortunately this was nearly like a ideal storm", Hinojosa told the paper. "You send your kid to be safe at school and to participate in extracurricular activities and this should not happen".
