Microsoft Announced New Xbox Adaptive Controller, Brings Accessibility For Gamers

Xbox Adaptive Controller

Beyond supporting a wide range of devices, the Adaptive Controller is created to be reconfigured at a moment's notice - that way, it can be used by people with different kinds of disabilities and specific needs, and they can experiment with various configurations to find what works best for them, and for different games.

Recently, a leak made its way on the internet suggesting that Microsoft is working on a new Xbox controller for accessibility and now the company has officially announced the new Xbox Adaptive controller which brings accessibility for all players. In a recent video unloaded by Microsoft, they provide numerous uses for the controller and how to give gamers the chance to get back into gaming. Microsoft worked with many organizations around the world in order to make this controller a reality for many disabled people across the globe.

To develop the Xbox Adaptive Controller, Microsoft consulted and worked with organizations such as the AbleGamers Charity, The Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Craig Hospital, Special Effect and Warfighter Engaged, as well as gamers with limited mobility.

"In the USA we estimate that 14% of Xbox One gamers have a temporary mobility limitation and that 8% of gamers have a permanent mobility limitation", Navin Kumar, director of product marketing for Xbox accessories. Our goal was to make the device as adaptable as possible, so gamers can create a setup that works for them in a way that is plug-and-play, extensible, and affordable. You can also find compatible foot pedals and one-handed joysticks to use with the Adaptive Controller. More recommended partner devices can be found here.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller will release later this year for $100. "On our journey of inclusive design, we have taken a wider view of our fans and a more inclusive approach to designing for them". "Microsoft have a competitively-priced product here that has massive potential to help many more people globally to enjoy the magic of video games".

Clearing all our doubts, Microsoft today on their Xbox blog explains little detail about its functionality and who are its target audiences.

Meanwhile, don't forget to check out Ability Week at Microsoft Store locations starting Tuesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 2, a five-day experience of events that showcases hearing, vision, mobility, and cognitive assistive technologies that empower people with accessibility needs.
