New Spike Lee movie ‘BlacKkKlansman’ is based on Colorado case Lee's latest film was greeted with a standing ovation at the festival

"BlacKkKlansman" is in competition for Cannes Film Festival's prestigious Palme d'Or award. Initially making contact by phone, Stallworth sends white Jewish partner Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) in his place to a succession of meetings with klansmen Walter (Ryan Egghold), Felix (Jasper Paakkonen) and Ivanhoe (Paul Walter Hauser), with Ron rising in the KKK's ranks until he's a trusted confidante of grand wizard David Duke (Topher Grace).

Director Spike Lee's latest film is based on the career of an El Paso man who went on to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.

He said Trump - whom he refused to call by name - had "a chance to say we are about love and not hate", and sharply criticised him for not denouncing the KKK.

Said Lee: "It was a defining moment and he could have said to the United States and the world that we're better than that". Jordan Peele, who made his directorial debut a year ago with Get Out and walked away with a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his work, is also a producer on BlacKkKlansman.

Lee chose to end "BlacKkKlansman" with footage from Charlottesville and of Trump's speech.

The final image is an upside-down American flag that fades to black and white.

Spike spoke about his controversial decision to end the film with documentary footage of the violent protest by neo-Nazis and white supremacists last summer in Charlottesville, Va., including scenes of the killing of counter-protester Heather Heyer. Now we have our first look at how these events will unfold under Lee's cinematic supervision thanks to the first BlacKkKlansman trailer. The movie included a powerful ending messaging about Heather Heyer, the young woman was killed when a white nationalist ran her over with a auto during the protests. I was not gonna put that murder scene in the film without her blessing.

Mr Lee called Charlottesville an "ugly, ugly, ugly blemish on America", but he also repeatedly stressed to the global Cannes media that the racism depicted in BlacKkKlansman is not unique to the United States.

'Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out, BlacKkKlansman offers an unflinching, true-life examination of race relations in 1970s America that is just as bracingly relevant in today's tumultuous world'. It's all over the world. We can't be silent. We all live on this planet, and this guy in the White House has the nuclear code.

He bounced into the premiere at the Palais announcing: "Brooklyn's in the house!" "I know it in my heart", said Lee.

In the aftermath of the August 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump notably addressed Americans, saying he saw "very fine people on both sides".
