Political Newcomer Wins Second District Democratic Primary

Primary Election 2018: Voter's guide

Eastman contrasted herself against Ashford, a centrist and former Republican who focused on his legislative experience and willingness to work with conservatives. Eastman defeated former Congressman Brad Ashford, who was a favorite among top leaders in the party's primary.

The race was among the highest-profile contests in Nebraska's primary election on Tuesday.

Nebraska voters set up a November gubernatorial showdown between Gov. Pete Ricketts and State Sen.

Eastman will face the incumbent, Republican Don Bacon, in the general election in November. It will either be the republican incumbent Deb Fischer - or her democratic challenger Jane Raybould.

Other top races included crowded fields in both parties for governor and Senate nominations, and a two-person race for treasurer that likely will mean a general election victory for the victor.

Primary Election 2018: Voter's guide

Eastman's victory over Ashford is one of the first major losses for the Democratic party establishment at the hands of a progressive challenger. First District Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry had no challenger yesterday, but he will face the victor of the Democratic primary, Jessica McClure, in November. No other candidates are running for the office.

The other Democratic hopefuls who ran were retired farmer, attorney and judge Frank Svoboda of Lincoln; retired Fremont real estate broker Larry Marvin; and Chris Janicek, the owner of an Omaha specialty cake business. The victor of that primary will go on to challenge Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry.

He faces fellow Republican Krystal Gabel in today's primary. Her primary challengers were Jack Heidel, a retired math professor from Omaha; Dennis Frank Macek, a writer and retired air conditioning technician from Lincoln; Jeffrey Lynn Stein, a professional photographer from Omaha; and Lincoln businessman Todd Watson.

Rep. Adrian Smith led in the 3rd District Republican primary with roughly two-thirds of the vote. True, Barack Obama carried it 50 to 49 percent in 2008 - but that was 10 years ago and in an election where Democrats won the popular vote by 7 percentage points.

(Lincoln, NE) - Governor Pete Ricketts will face a state lawmaker as he seeks a second term.
