Russian opposition leader Navalny sentenced to 30 days in jail

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was detained during the May 5 anti-Putin rally, arrives at the courthouse in Moscow on May 15, 2018.

Moscow's Tverskoy District Court convicted Navalny on Tuesday on charges of organizing an unauthorized rally and ordered him jailed for 30 days.

Initial hearings in the case were postponed last week in order to field witness testimonies from police officers. "Therefore, the term on both rulings begins on the same day, today", it said.

The Moscow City Court told Interfax that the terms of arrest Navalny was sentenced to do not add up.

But 1,600 anti-Kremlin activists, including Navalny, 41, were detained for their actions.

Navalny himself was grabbed by police and carried away by his arms and legs shortly after appearing in Moscow's packed Pushkin square.

The vocal Putin foe was released hours later but was ordered not to leave Moscow while the cases against him were pending.

He was barred from running in the most recent election as a result and called for a boycott of the vote.

The anti-Putin campaigner has been sentenced to 30 days in prison on May 5. "I do not need a new tsar", Navalny said via his Twitter account after the decision. The charge carries a punishment of up to 15 days in custody.
