Samsung plans to supply ZTE and other OEMs with Exynos chipsets

Samsung начнет продавать процессоры Exynos другим компаниям

A recent report suggests that Samsung is planning on approaching other OEMs to get them to use its Exynos chipsets in their smartphones.

China's ZTE is likely in Samsung's sights, according to the report, as the firm was recently slapped with a seven-year sales ban in the United States which means it's no longer able to obtain chips from American chipmaker Qualcomm.

"We are talking to all OEMs", Inyup Kang, head of Samsung's logic chip developer called System LSI, told Reuters in an interview. The clarification claims that there is no certainty that a deal can be reached with ZTE, and that the company treats all vendors equally. Basically, this means that ZTE won't be able to use Qualcomm's chips inside its smartphones, so the Chinese company is looking for another supplier.

ZTE now represents a hard situation for many non-US companies looking to do business.

According to Reuters, Samsung is only in talks with ZTE at this moment for supply of its Exynos chipsets. Samsung generates most of its profits from its memory chips, and the report notes that it has been ramping up development of logic chips such as mobile processors, image sensors and automotive chips in a diversification attempt.

Samsung's System LSI business saw a 27 percent rise in shipments past year, Counterpoint says. He stated that the company is in discussion with "multiple automobile companies" to develop chips for autonomous driving, but did not name the auto makers.

TSMC is the world's top contract chip manufacturer, followed by the likes of USA -based Global Foundries, Taiwan-based UMC and Samsung.

Samsung is far behind Qualcomm and Apple in mobile SoC production, but the solution to use in-house chips helped the company grow its smartphone business, including a 27% rise in shipments for System LSI.

Samsung's semiconductor business reported an operating profit of 35.2 trillion won (a whopping £24.5 billion) in 2017. He declined to provide last year's growth rate.
