Walmart to Roll Out Upscale Lord & Taylor Products Online

Lord & Taylor, once a leading apparel retailer, is joining forces with Walmart to create an online store on Walmart.com that will offer over 100 fashion brands, in a sign of the strategies retailers will need to consider in the new retail environment. Walmart is launching a Lord + Taylor store on its website.

More than 125 premium brands, including Tommy Bahama, Vince Camuto, Miss Selfridge, La La Anthony and H Halston, will soon be available on a dedicated Lord & Taylor site on Walmart.com, the companies said on Tuesday.

Walmart notes that customer browsing its online store over the next few weeks will see it start adding products from Lord & Taylor.

Walmart store customers have a median household income of about $48,000, below the $56,000 of its website customers and the $85,000 median income of Amazon shoppers, says Craig Johnson, president of the retail group Customer Growth Partners. "The next step is the launch of the Lord & Taylor flagship store, which introduces exciting new premium brands to our customers". "We are excited for the opportunity to serve exponentially more customers with our premium fashion offerings, including our famous dress selection and many stylish brands".

Lord & Taylor products available at Walmart.com will include men's, women's and kids' clothing, as well as shoes, accessories and jewelry. Orders $35 and up will be eligible for free two-day shipping. Walmart.com's new fashion experience will consist of two shops: Everyday Brands and Premium Brands.

Walmart is keeping the new shop separate from its existing merchandise. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

Lord & Taylor, founded in 1826, is one of America's first department stores.

"Walmart doesn't seem like a likely choice to make a splash in fashion", said Richard Baum, managing partner of Consumer Growth Partners.

Walmart also points out that customers that shop from the Lord & Taylor flagship store on its website will still get the same benefits as shopping on other parts of the site.
