New Whitney Houston Documentary Sheds a Light on a Youth Filled With Trauma

Miramax and Roadside Attractions have revealed the new full trailer for Whitney, the documentary about legendary chart-topping singer and actress Whitney Houston (The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale). Since then, several filmmakers have been clamoring to tell the story of her life, but only one film has been officially authorized by Houston's family.

Whitney Houston's ascent into the upper echelons of the music industry, alongside her tragic demise, will be recounted in the upcoming documentary aptly titled Whitney. An interviewee speaking off camera in the teaser can be heard saying "Robyn was [Houston's] safety net" and "Bobby was jealous". Another adds: "His heart was, he wanted to be on the stage. He wanted to be in the forefront, and eventually she stepped down to lift him up", says another witness to Whitney and Bobby's strained relationship. Crawford, on the other hand, declined to be interviewed for the film.

The trailer shows the seven-time Grammy victor opening up about the ugly side of celebrity ("People think it's easy, but it's not") and trash-talking fellow singer Paula Abdul ("That girl is singing off-key on the record").

Drug addiction loomed large in Houston's life and contributed to her death, but in another gripping moment from the trailer, Reid denied he knew about the singer's struggle, despite working with her throughout the years.

The first official trailer for Whitney has arrived and it's packed with information about the late, great, icon, Whitney Houston.

The film is expected to hit theatres on July 6.

Dee Dee Warwick (born Delia Mae Warrick) was the niece of Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, and the younger sister of veteran soul star Dionne Warwick.
