Pompeo waging psychological warfare to undermine Iran's economy: former official

Washington's demands addressed to Iran, which US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo voiced on Monday, are nonsense, because they leave no chance for clinching a deal, Russia's representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mikhail Ulyanov said on Tuesday.

The former head of Exports Commission at the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture described the recent speech by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as a part of Washington's psychological warfare against the Islamic Republic. Taken together, the demands US would constitute a wholesale transformation by Iran's government.

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has condemned the U.S. for vowing to impose what it said would be the "strongest sanctions in history" on his country, the BBC reports.

Iranian officials have said the EU's adopted mechanisms should be enforced by August 8 when United States sanctions against the Islamic Republic begin to take effect.

Jannati is probably one of the most hardline ayatollahs in Iran; he heads not only the Assembly of Experts, charged with choosing and replacing the supreme leader, but also the Guardian Council, which is responsible for vetting candidates during the elections.

"They want to have everything".

Germany's economy minister says the government will help firms maintain business with Iran where it can after the U.S. decision to reimpose sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Consequently, Trump's misguided decision to move the U.S. out of the JCPOA and increase pressure and sanctions on Iran could end up having disastrous consequences not only for Iran and its people, but also the already turbulent Middle East.

"This list may seem long to some, but it is simply a reflection of the massive scope of Iranian malign behavior", Pompeo said. "We've never tried to erect this sort of sanctions regime amid a really sharp strategic divergence with our closest allies". In the words of NCRI president-elect Maryam Rajavi, regime change in Iran is "a requisite for regional peace, democracy, security, and stability".

He also called for a full stop to Iran's enrichment of uranium, which was sharply curbed by the Iran deal, and for worldwide monitors to gain "unqualified access" to all sites, including military facilities that Iran considers off-limits. Funding of Hezbollah and Hamas must end.

Well before Pompeo spoke, European leaders suggested that the USA approach won't work.

The Europeans have pledged to uphold the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) together with Iran but fallen short of giving Tehran concrete guarantees that trade would remain intact.

It's a stance highly criticised by European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini who said there was "no alternative" to the agreement.

Even the United Kingdom was willing to openly break with the US.

"The United States is unable to understand that Iran has sovereign rights, including the right to civilian nuclear power", Ulyanov stressed. "The idea of a jumbo Iran treaty (is) very hard".

Not surprisingly, Iran rejected Pompeo's demands as well.

"Trump's secretary of state is 40 years behind the times". A member of the Iranian parliament's national security committee suggested that the best approach would be to wait for USA policy to change once Trump leaves office.

"Iranians shouldn't play into the challenges and US radicalism", Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh told the Iranian Students News agency. He said Iran should simply "allow for this era of extremism to end".

The speech was a fresh example of the Trump administration's maximalist with-us-or-against-us strategy that's also playing out over North Korea's nuclear program.

Critics rounded on Pompeo's speech, saying his demands could have been made without pulling America from the nuclear deal.
