Syrian air defense intercepts missile attack on airport

A US -led coalition air strike on Syrian army positions overnight killed at least 12 pro-regime fighters in an area where both sides have been battling holdout jihadists, a monitor said on May 24.

Syrian state media and a military media unit run by Lebanon's Hezbollah group say the US-led coalition has targeted Syrian army positions, but USA military officials have denied any knowledge. No casualties have been reported, and Israel has yet to claim responsibility, but the country routinely keeps silent about its growing military role in neighboring Syria, where Israel recently launched a historic wave of airstrikes against suspected Iranian and pro-Iran targets.

The Britain-based monitoring group said the strike was carried out by the US-led coalition in an area south of Albu Kamal which has repeatedly been attacked by the Islamic State jihadist group.

Citing defense sources, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported Thursday that the Syrian armed forces had intercepted an Israeli attack on a military airport in the central province of Homs. It did not give additional details.

The news agency had earlier said that sounds of explosions were heard near Dabaa airport, which lies about 20 kilometers southwest of Homs near the Lebanese border.

The Hezbollah leader also spoke about the US' attempt to impose harsher sanctions targeting the group's funds by going after proxy benefactors like Iran, as well as targeting top Hezbollah operatives and any businesses and companies that are aiding and abetting the organization.

Israel is ready to take preventive steps in order to protect the country from attacks of Iran, which is seeking to gain a foothold in neighboring Syria, Israeli Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Zeev Elkin told Sputnik.

Russian Federation and Iran support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the complex Syrian conflict, which is now in its eighth year.

The strikes targeted "movements" of pro-government forces, near the T2 oil pumping station, the Observatory said.

Speaking 18 years after Israel pulled its forces out of southern Lebanon, Nasrallah struck a defiant tone, saying that "threats and scare tactics have no effect on us", blaming Israel for strikes in Syria Thursday night that reportedly struck Hezbollah targets.

On Wednesday, a senior Israeli Air Force official warned the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad that if its air defense systems fired on Israeli jets, they would be targeted in return.
