American Citizen Held in Venezuela Released, Trump Announces

The Venezuelan government on Saturday released an American, Josh Holt, who it has held since 2016 on weapons charges, U.S. President Donald Trump and Utah Sen.

"Good news about the release of the American hostage from Venezuela".

Local News 8 and KIDK Eyewitness News will continue to update this story as more updates are released.

Holt's release comes more than a week after he posted videos to Facebook during a prison riot, pleading for help from Americans and the USA government. "I just want to ask and plead once again to my government, to my people, to my senators and to everyone in the United States to please not leave me alone here", he said in the clip. His family has said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time of a raid in the Caracas neighborhood of his wife, Thamara Caleno, whom he met through online Spanish lessons after returning from an LDS mission.

President Trump celebrated the development in some tweets Saturday as the newly released couple are expected to land in D.C. this evening.

Mr. Corker, the Tennessee Republican who leads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, secretly met Friday with Mr. His family has denied the accusations and believe the Venezuelan government is holding Holt and his wife to bargain with the USA, which has imposed economic sanctions on the country.

The Maduro government has not commented on the reasons for the release.

Hatch also credited the efforts of Caleb McCarry, "whose expertise and effort in Venezuela on my behalf (have) been instrumental in bringing Josh home".

Senator Hatch said Holt was on his way to the United States and praised Corker's "pivotal efforts". Orrin Hatch announced Saturday morning. "I also would like to thank Secretary (of State Mike) Pompeo and his team at the State Department for all that they have done".

Joshua Holt, who traveled to Venezuela from Utah in 2016 to marry a Spanish-speaking Mormon woman but soon found himself jailed and later branded the CIA's top spy in Latin America, was set free by the anti-American Maduro government on Saturday in what his family called "this miracle". Thanks to @realdonaldtrump and others who I've had the pleasure to work with to secure Josh's freedom.

"Josh & Thamy Holt had nothing to do with internal politics in #Venezuela", Rubio tweeted.
