A source familiar with the issue who asked to remain anonymous said there was no quid pro quo or agreement to ease US sanctions tied to Holt's release, and that Trump was not involved in the final negotiations.

The United States accuses Maduro's government of stifling democracy, repressing the opposition and massive corruption.

The video, posted on the Twitter account for Hatch's office, depicts Holt and his wife, Thamy, reuniting with family in the senator's Washington, D.C., office, with the caption "Reunited".

One woman interviewed by the Herald, said Holt had been framed with the crime because he was a US citizen, alleging that she and four other witnesses saw government authorities plant the weapons in Holt's apartment.

Matt Whitlock, a spokesman for Hatch, said the Utah Republican called Maduro last week after hearing of riots by inmates at the intelligence agency headquarters where Holt was held. The government accused Holt and his wife of being spies who were hoarding weapons and attempting to overthrow the government, according to the Miami Herald.

President Donald Trump, in a tweet, described Holt as a "hostage" and said he expected to host Holt and his family at the White House on Saturday evening. Maduro went forward with a presidential election last week that the US has called a "sham". He and his wife have been held without a trial since 2016. The U.S. contended Holt was held on trumped up charges. Corker left an hour later; neither the senator nor the president made any statements. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who said Holt soon would be reunited with "his sweet, long-suffering family" in Riverton, Utah. His wife also was jailed on allegations of being Holt's accomplice. He was depressed and at one point lost so much weight that he dropped several pant sizes, she said. "We are grateful to all who participated in this miracle".
