Meetings on potential North Korea summit going 'very well'

In this May 26, 2018 photo provided on May 27, 2018, by South Korea Presidential Blue House via Yonhap News Agency, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, left, is guided by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, right, at the northern side of Panmunjom in North Korea. So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore.

On Friday, Trump indicated the summit could be salvaged after welcoming a conciliatory statement from North Korea saying it remained open to talks. "I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done", he said Saturday. Kim and Moon met for the second time in a month on Saturday to discuss carrying out the peace commitments they reached in their first summit and Kim's potential meeting with President Donald Trump, Moon's office said. The atmosphere was "just like an ordinary meeting between friends" and the two held "candid talks", Moon said.

Mr. Moon and Mr. Kim agreed at a surprise meeting on Saturday that a possible North Korea-U.S. summit must be held successfully, Mr. Moon told a news conference in Seoul.

It remains unclear whether Kim will ever agree to fully abandon his nuclear arsenal in return, despite Moon's insistence that Kim can be persuaded to abandon his nuclear facilities, materials and bombs in a verifiable and irreversible way in exchange for credible security and economic guarantees.

"While Washington and Pyongyang have expressed their hopes for a summit through published statements, Moon has to step up as the mediator because the surest way to set the meeting in stone would be an official confirmation of intent between heads of states", Hong said.

"The thing he was uncertain about was not denuclearisation but concerns on whether he could trust that the United States would end its hostile policy and guarantee the security of his regime when the North denuclearises itself".

"I believe this is a tremendous setback for North Korea and, indeed, a setback for the world", Trump said in his letter to North Korean officials cancelling the summit. KCNA said the leaders also agreed to meet frequently. "Looks like it's going along very well", the president told reporters.

Pictures from the summit show Mr Moon and Mr Kim shaking hands as well as embracing, and reveal Mr Kim brought along his sister, Kim Yo Jung. It was a decisionmade by the two Koreas, Yoon said.
