NAB banking systems facing widespread outages

National Australia Bank has apologised for an outage that downed ATMs, Eftpos and online banking across the country and has vowed to compensate customers who suffered losses.

Batchelor said she was unsure just how many NAB customers had been affected - a detail that is likely to be examined in the bank's post-incident report.

"All we know is it was a significant failure and it impacted all of our services so eftpos, ATMs, mobile banking and internet banking were all affected".

NAB experienced nationwide outages on Saturday, leaving millions unable to access their cash.

He did not know what caused the power cut or exactly where in Melbourne it happened.

"... if there was a loss this morning driven by the outage today, yes compensation will be provided to customers".

Many of its business customers were particularly incensed by the long outage, as they had to turn customers away on one of the week's busiest trading days.

The bank. according to Batchelor, will "work with [customers] to estimate what their losses might have been" as a result of the outage.

Customers overseas complained of being unable to pay for things like taxi fares because of the outage.

"It's an incredibly rare event and it took a number of hours for our technicians to be able to bring the systems back up", she told reporters at NAB's Toorak branch on Saturday afternoon.

No personal data was compromised during the system failure, Ms Batchelor said.

One person on Facebook wrote: "When you found out about this problem why don't you text all of your customers?"

Cindy Batchelor, the Executive General Manager of NAB Business, spoke to media in the wake of the outage, which knocked out banking facilities for more than six hours yesterday.
