North Korea talks might happen after all

Photos released by the South Korean presidential office showed the two leaders embracing, shaking hands amid opulent decor and holding intimate discussions, accompanied by just a single aide each.

National Intelligence Service Director Suh Hoon of South Korea and Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea of North Korea accompanied their leaders at the summit table.

But Moon, the son of North Korean war refugees who rose to power a year ago and has staked his presidency on the prospect of inter-Korean peace, might also be trying to secure his own commitments from the North - even if talks with Trump go nowhere.

An advance team of White House and State department officials is still planning on leaving for Singapore tomorrow, to work out logistics for the trip, Politico reports. The first summit was held at the Peace House, a South Korean building opposite Panmungak.

In a tweet, Trump the summit was "likely" to happen as scheduled June 12.

"Everybody plays games", President Donald Trump declared as he suggested the potentially historic North Korean summit he had suddenly called off might be getting back on track.

"It was a very nice statement they put out", Trump told reporters at the White House.

"We'll see what happens", he said Friday as he departed for the Naval Academy graduation ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland.

"Instead, journalists were invited and we will not have forensic evidence that much was accomplished", the official said. He also said "our country has regained the respect that we used to have long ago", declaring, "America is back".

Office in Seoul said North and South Korean leaders are meeting again at a border village to discuss the US-North Korean summit.

By Friday, North Korea had issued a statement saying it was still "willing to give the US time and opportunities" to reconsider talks "at any time, at any format".

But the delicate diplomacy had appeared to be in jeopardy in recent days after North Korea threatened to pull out of the meeting over joint military exercises by the USA and South Korea in the region - and over comments by John Bolton, Trump's national security adviser, suggesting the administration may be seeking regime change. Trump cited North Korean hostility in cancelling the summit.

The thaw between North and South Korea comes after a tense 2017, in which multiple missile tests by North Korea prompted an global outcry and an exchange of insults and threats between Kim and Trump.

Mr Trump, in his letter to Kim on Thursday, objected specifically to a statement from a top North Korean Foreign Ministry official.

Moon said Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was 'very regrettable'.

Frank Aum, a former senior Pentagon adviser on North Korea, said it seeks a phased process in which each side takes "progressive and synchronous" steps toward denuclearization and peace.

Trump's latest about-face sent officials scrambling in Washington. It fanned fears in South Korea that the country may lose its voice between a rival intent on driving a wedge between Washington and Seoul and an American President who thinks less of the traditional alliance with Seoul than his predecessors.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Trump did not want a meeting that was "just a political stunt".
