Boyband BTS makes K-Pop history topping U.S. album charts

The seven-piece band made their performance debut at the Billboard Music Awards one week ago, where they slayed the stage with a live performance of Fake Love.

As the album is primarily sung in Korean, it is also the first foreign-language number one album in over 12 years.

During their interview, Ellen pranked bandmates V, Suga, Jin, Jungkook, RM, Jimin, and J-Hope by having one of her staffers dress up as a fan girl and jump out of a box and scare them!

According to one data analysis, they were the most talked about phenomenon on Twitter in 2017, with almost double the number of mentions on the social media platform than US President Donald Trump and Canadian badboy heartthrob Justin Bieber combined.

Their new album "Love Yourself: Tear" toppled "Beerpong and Bentleys" by rising hip-hop star Post Malone, whose facial tattoos are the very antithesis of BTS's wholesome and meticulously manicured image.

K-pop, an abbreviation of Korean pop, has grown beyond its origins of electronic, hip-hop, pop and rock into a subculture of its own. In 2017, their album Love Yourself: Her was the first K-Pop album to crack the top 10 United States album charts, rising to number seven.

The album went on to hit the number one spot on iTunes in more than 70 countries.

K-pop was conceived in South Korea in the 1990s as a Western-Asian hybrid and is now a multi-million dollar industry with many bands winning audiences around the globe.

In the last decade or so, K-pop has won growing legions of non Korean-speaking fans.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks albums based on traditional album sales, downloads and streams.

BTS is continuing their reign over America!

"Congratulations and thank you so much for representing Korea on this prestigious music chart!" wrote another.
