Dolby Atmos is finally coming to Apple TV 4K

SAN JOSE-Apple announced tvOS updates on the WWDC stage, though the company didn't confirm whether these features amount to a whole new version number.

Apple said iTunes now offers customers the largest collection of 4K HDR movies, and will soon feature the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies. The good news is that Apple will update all the movies and TV shows youve purchased to Atmos sound.

tvOS 12 will bring support for Dolby Atmos audio and work with the Dolby Atmos soundboard, the only soundbar to support both Dolby Atmos and Vision. No 4K HDR experience is complete without the audio to go with it, which is why Apple TV 4K now supports Dolby Atmos. Let's say you subscribe to Charter's broadband internet and cable services, the Apple TV will recognize that and simply log you in automatically to all of your cable apps that use Charter's credentials if it recognizes Charter as your ISP.

The software update will also add new screensavers in 4K HDR quality created in collaboration with NASA, International Space Station National Lab, and Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, and recorded from the International Space Station (ISS). Now, users are able to get a brief idea of where the location on screensavers were taken.

It will first roll out to Charter Spectrum customers, which was the latest company to join the list of pay TV providers supporting SSO.

Later this year, customers in the US will have access to live channels and tens of thousands of on-demand programs via an all-new Spectrum TV app on their Apple TV 4K, iPhone and iPad, seamlessly integrated with Siri and the Apple TV App. It will be the only streaming box to do so although it requires a compatible sound bar and TV. With tvOS 12, it will gain support for three other home control protocols. More providers are coming according to Apple. This fall, Apple will add Atmos functionality to a huge variety of movies, including Mad Max: Fury Road, Justice League and Jumanji.
