Major Physics Experiment discovered A Particle which shouldn’t exist

Now, another major physics experiment came to the same conclusion, reports Live Science. Others, like the three known neutrinos, are more abstract: They're high-energy particles that stream through the universe, barely interacting with other matter.

The particle was first spotted in the mid-1990s in an experiment that left scientists baffled. (A 5-sigma result has 1-in-3.5- million odds of being the result of random fluctuations in the data.) The researchers wrote that MiniBooNE and LSND combined represent a 6.1-sigma result (meaning more than one-in-500 million odds of being a fluke), though some researchers expressed a degree of skepticism about that claim.

LSND, as well as MiniBooNE experiment, used neutrinos beams and fired them to a detector concealed in the back of an insulation to suppress the remaining radiations. As you read this, trillions of neutrinos are travelling through your body.

As waves of neutrinos stream through space, they periodically "oscillate", jumping back and forth between one flavor and another, she explained. It is not confirmed yet, or even demonstrated with a low enough chance of being wrong to be considered by scientists as nearly fact, but a paper based on the lab's Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) instrument suggests the existence of a new type of elementary particle, possibly the hypothetical and elusive sterile neutrino.

'That would be huge; that's beyond the standard model; that would require new particles ... and an all-new analytical framework, ' Kate Scholberg, particle physicist at Duke University told LiveScience.

But, it can be "caught" by observing its influence on the other types of neutrinos.

A new study performed by a team of researchers at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago brought to light numerous electron neutrinos.

Just like the LSND experiment, MiniBooNE fired beams of neutrinos at a detector placed behind an insulator, whose goal was to block out all other radiation.

Due to their physical features sterile neutrinos can not be directly detected with ultra-sensitive electronic photomultipliers used in neutrino observatories.

The oscillation rate is predictable, so even a few extra electron neutrinos would be a result.

They observed 2,437 events - which was around 460 more than they expected.

The results mirror those seen in the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND), an experiment at the now-decommissioned Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico back in the mid-1990s - the only other experiment which has detected the presence of sterile neutrinos.

'We have two very different detectors...and we have the same results, ' MiniBooNE physicist En-Chuan Huang said.

The experiment was set up to replicate an earlier experiment, which found that neutrinos can change flavour.

Most damning was that the result in the IceCube neutrino detector In the South Pole at 2016.

The results showed that MiniBooNE detected several hundred more electron neutrinos than predicted, an excess which supports the findings of the previous LSND experiment.

If these results are confirmed, it could help to explain the existence of dark matter.

Neutrinos react extremely weakly with matter, has no charge and participates only in the weak nuclear and gravitational interactions. But it's certain we'll be hearing more about sterile neutrinos before long. Electron neutrinos were recorded during the observation of flashes of light arising from the interaction of particles with antiparticles.

For example, the Standard Model suggests stars on the fringes of a spinning, spiral galaxy should travel slower than those located close to the galactic centre, where visible matter is more concentrated. These particles have even been proposed as a possible candidate for what dark matter could be made of. After all, the existence of sterile neutrinos has been suggested by only two experiments, both of which are based on the same method of detection (while the others use different methods of testing). However, physicists assume that probably there is a fourth type of neutrino, called sterile.

'There was this collection of hints, and theorists were convinced it exists'.
