Nipah Virus outbreak result of tampering with nature: Nadda

Kerala MLA Wears Mask In Assembly To Protest Nipah Impact Gets Told Off

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said that Nipah virus had just one source and the situation was under control at the moment.

"We will not lower the vigil". It was unfortunate that some people had been carrying out an adverse campaign over the Nipah situation through the social media.

On the antibody vaccine for the infection brought from Australia, the minister said it would be used only if fresh cases emerged. "The state government will bear all the expenses of these patients who underwent treatment for Nipah", said Vijayan.

The government would continue to provide free ration to the 2,500 people who were under observation in Kozhikode and neighbouring Malappuram districts, he said. He said that the work done by the state's health professionals in containing the disease's spread after its outbreak was really encouraging and showed their commitment and dedication.

Opposition parties pledged their support to the government.

The Nipah virus itself can cause encephalitis - a risky swelling of the brain - and common symptoms vary from none to elevated fevers, cough, headache, shortness of breath and confusion, the Gulf News reported on Monday.

During the day, treasury and opposition benches clashed in the assembly after Parakkal Abdulla of the IUML came to the House wearing mask and gloves.

The health minister accused the MLA of trivialising a serious issue for publicity.

Allaying fears on travel and the fruit trade, he said, that transmission of the virus is through bodily fluids and droplets from cough from those who were severely ill.

Experts from NIV and departments of Animal Husbandry and Forest have begun collecting samples which would be sent to NIHSAD, to test for presence of the virus in the fruit-eating bats, Dr N N Sasi, the Director Animal Husbandry, told PTI. The main concern was to control the spread and the search would divert attention, the official said.

It was only after Sabith's brother, Mohammed Salih, fell ill on May 17 and died with similar symptoms, were the samples tested at the National Institute of Virology, Manipal, and it was confirmed that he had Nipah.
