Opioid Overdose Medication Naloxone Recalled Due To Presence Of Particulate Matter

Opioid Overdose Antidote Naloxone Recalled Due to Particulate Matter

According to the FDA, the manufacturer of opioid overdose antidote Naloxone, has issued a recall.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that the drug's maker initiated the recall because of a potential for "loose particulate matter on the syringe plunger" which could cause irritation or an allergic reaction. If a patient were exposed to the matter in question, Hospira says there is a low chance of experiencing a wide range of adverse health effects.

See the full recall details. Anyone who experiences a problem should report it to the FDA.

Hospira is voluntarily issuing the recall of Naloxone.

Package labeling recommends visual inspection to detect the presence of discoloration or particulates before administration, which would diminish the risks for using these lots. The drug is known to restore the respiration to a person who stops breathing due to the overdose.

Naloxone is available for free, with training on how to use it, at Hancock Public Health.

The two lots, 72680LL and 76510LL of Naloxone Hydrochloride Injection, USP, 0.4 mg/mL, 1 mL in 2.5 mL, Carpuject Single-use cartridge syringe system (NDC 0409-1782-69), was distrubted nationwide from February 2017 to February 2018.

People can survive an overdose, but it comes down to timing.

Naloxone used to only be available in hospitals but is now carried by many first responders, medical professionals and is available without a prescription in some places, all in response to the ongoing opioid epidemic.
