Broccoli Coffee Is a Gross Thing That Exists

Broccoli Coffee Is a Gross Thing That Exists

However, Keck points out coffee itself is an acquired taste - and that a broccoli latte isn't so unusual in the age of the tumeric latte, the beetroot latte and other superfood cafe drinks.

The only plus is that its made from "imperfect broccoli" which means you are saving it from going to waste...by drinking it in your coffee.

But apparently, those fun Australians, specifically the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Hort Innovation, have chose to ground up broccoli into a fine powder and put it in their morning joe.

Every two tablespoons of the powder contain one serving of broccoli.

The chief executive of Hort Innovation, John Lloyd, says the powder is also ideal for smoothies, soups and baked goods.

Though the powder can be added to your smoothies, dips, soups, and bread, CSIRO chose to try it out on coffee by introducing the "broccolatte" to one of the cafes in Melbourne.

"The broccoli powder has already been used for the production of extruded snacks with high vegetable content".

Research conducted by CSIRO found that 51 per cent of Australians were not consuming the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables per day, and they hope the powder will make it easier for those who are on the go to get their nutrients.

The powder and a range of snacks are being developed as part of a research project that aims to reduce vegetable waste by creating healthy food products from "ugly" produce.

"The CSIRO team and Hort Innovation are discussing potential commercial applications with produce growers and grower groups across Australia who are interested in getting the powder on the market", says Dr Augustin.

It's been produced by Australia's chief research organisation, the CSIRO and Hort Innovation, using a "combination of selected pre-treatment and drying processes" that help to keep the flavour, colour and nutrients from broccoli.

"Eat your vegetables!" may not have been a prevalent command - nor an obeyed one - among Australian parents.

"I see this project as the emerging new food trend", said John Said of broccoli producer Fresh Select.
