Capito joins President Trump for signing of childhood cancer STAR Act

Exercise lowers risk of death for childhood cancer survivors, study says

The STAR Act will expand opportunities for childhood cancer research, improve efforts to identify and track childhood cancer incidences and enhance the quality of life for childhood cancer survivors.

Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and several other hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Norway studied data on 15,450 adult cancer survivors, finding vigorous exercise in early adulthood over the course of eight years lowered their risk of death.

The researchers also found that survivors were 31 per cent more likely to report daytime sleepiness and 26 per cent more likely to have poor "sleep efficiency". This can lead to greater likelihood of the persistent or worsened emotional distress. "Thus, addressing disrupted sleep in these survivors may improve long-term psychological functioning". This study characterized sleep behaviors in adults who had survived childhood cancer and examined associations among sleep, cancer diagnosis, treatment exposures, and emotional functioning.

The proclamation was read as Saint Lucia commemorated National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday June 3, 2018, with a gathering of members of Faces of Cancer Saint Lucia along with cancer survivors at Serenity Park in Castries, a release from the Mayor's office stated.

NCI estimates that nationwide, 10,380 children and adolescents up to 14 years of age were diagnosed with cancer within the last year, and 1,250 will die of the disease. The study also involved 380 siblings with a mean age of 33 years.

Both of the groups completed sleep quality, fatigue, and sleepiness measures. Emotional functioning was assessed about 8 years before and 2 years after the sleep survey.

"Sleep is quite amenable to behavioural interventions".

"We know that sometimes after treatment there are residual health effects from childhood cancer", Senator Capito said.
